Tri-Community Tackles Household Hazardous Waste

Check-In from Maple Street:

Please show the individual at this station your Driver’s License so they can ensure that you have an appointment. PLEASE STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES.

Registered participants will be required to drive into the DPW site from the Maple Street entrance (behind the DPW garage). If arriving on Blue Star Highway, turn west on North and south on Maple, or turn west on Old Allegan and then north on Maple. Signs and volunteers will direct vehicles to the proper entrance. Vehicles will not be able to turn into the DPW site directly from Bluestar Highway.

No Fee Disposal Items

  • Agricultural and landscaping chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, etc.
  • Automotive fluids such as motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, brake fluid, carburetor and fuel injection cleaners, gasoline starter fluids, etc.
  • Cleaners and solvents such as drain openers, oven cleaners, metal cleaners and polishes, grease and rust solvents, etc.
  • Building/remodeling materials such as paint thinners, oil-based paint, strippers and removers, adhesives, wood preservatives, etc.
  • Rechargeable batteries such as Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lithium, and Small sealed lead batteries, or small “button” batteries as they contain small amounts of mercury and silver.
  • Household (alkaline) batteries.
  • Compact fluorescent lights, fluorescent lights, PCB light ballasts, transformers, capacitors, electric
    lamps, etc.
  • Spent fuel such as kerosene, propane (cylinders and tanks), etc.
  • Unwanted or expired over-the-counter or prescription medications.
  • Smoke detectors.
  • Other miscellaneous substances such as photographic chemicals, swimming pool chemicals,
    mercury or mercury-containing items, and any known or unknown substances that fall into hazardous material classifications such as acids, bases, flammables, oxidizers, halogenated/non- halogenated solvents; aqueous liquids,; liquids containing heavy metals, cyanide, sulfide, and other chemicals that may be corrosive.
  • Resident can bring most electronic items for FREE. Some items may require a fee. (See “fee required” items below.)
  • Computer peripherals, e.g., CPUs, printers, scanners, laptop, projector, etc. FREE!
  • Other consumer electronics, e.g., fax machines, desktop copiers, audio/stereo equipment, VCR, DVD, cell phone and other telecommunications devices, video camera, etc. FREE!

Fee Disposal Items

We will collect the fees for the following items:
  • Televisions - $10/each – any size
  • Computer monitors = $10/each – any size
  • Car batteries - $20/each
  • Small a/c unit (containing freon) - $10/each Dehumidifiers (containing freon) - $10/each TVs - $10/each
  • Computer monitors - $10/each

Items Not Accepted

  • Latex paint. Latex paint is water based, which means it is not hazardous. It is not accepted through this program in order to control costs as it can be donated or landfilled. For usable paint in quantities of 1 gallon or more, consider donating it to Habitat for Humanity. It can be disposed of with household waste as long as it is completely dried out. Recommended drying methods are to simply remove the lid and let the can sit. To speed up drying time, mix cat litter, saw dust or pour paint into a box with either material. Once the paint is dry, throw everything out with household trash.
  • Acrylic paint
  • Major appliances – no LARGE appliances please
  • Microwave ovens
  • Large air conditioners
  • Kitchen items - such as blenders, toasters, bread makers, etc.
  • Radioactive material
  • Explosives
  • Ammunition
  • Tires
  • Asphalt
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Roofing shingles
  • Building supplies
  • Trash
  • Debris
